Color Splash Quilt

I love using curves to create design elements in my quilts. I also love using lots and lots of fabrics. So, when designing a quilt for Quilter’s Newsletters Best Scrap Quilts 2014 I wanted to combine these two loves. After tossing around some different color options, I decided to use four colors. So, I grabbed my color wheel and selected two sets of complimentary colors…purple/green and teal/orange. Then I pulled out my scraps, along with a variety of black and white fabrics. And….Violá! Color Splash was born!

For the blocks, I used precut 10″ squares, as well as leftover strips and other scraps. I chose a black fabric with gray dots for the border. Then I topped it all off with a black-and-white stripe for the binding.

I appliquéd the black and white arcs using the starch machine appliqué technique from my book Simple Circles and Quick Curves. My philosophy is why piece those curves when it’s so much easier to appliqué them!

I was reading today’s issue of Quilters Newsletter and your quilt, Color Splash, popped out at me and said “stop”. It really is beautiful and the colors just speak to you. I have yet to make my first quilt because #1 I’m a chicken and #2 I have no idea what I want to make. I have boxes full of my mother’s old square dancing dresses that I got the bright idea of taking apart and making 5 quilts (for my grandchildren) as a remembrance of their great grandmother. So far all I’ve done is unpack and pack the boxes up. I have no idea where to start. I do need some supplies though…rulers, etc. so that is my excuse for not starting yet. Once again Color Splash if beautiful.
